Dahabiya Nile cruise or a larger ship?

Checked October 2026

Pick a dahabiya for a small boat, and a larger ship for a pool. The tour operator Egypt Escapes describes a dahabiya as a shallow-draught wooden boat with two masts. It typically carries 10 to 20 guests. It lists a sun deck and a Jacuzzi on board. The bigger ships add pools.

Everything below comes from the tour operator Egypt Escapes' own pages, read on 15 October 2026: a seller describing its own boats, restated in our words.

What is the difference between a dahabiya and a cruise ship?

Egypt Escapes' dahabiya page describes a shallow-draught wooden boat with two masts. It typically carries 10 to 20 guests. The listing mentions a sun deck and a Jacuzzi.

A larger ship adds pools. The seller's vessels page lists a rooftop pool on MS Chateau Lafayette and a sun-deck pool on Steigenberger Legacy.

So the first split is size and facilities. A dahabiya is a small boat with a short guest list. A larger ship has the pool.

Count the cabins as well as the guests. The Gorgonia dahabiya has 12 cabins. Farouz El Nil has six. Both are dahabiyas, and they are different sizes.

What is the best cruise to dahabiya Nile?

The best one is the one whose answers suit you. Check these on any boat you're offered.

  • Cabins. Ask how many there are, and which type yours is.
  • How the boat moves. The dahabiya page says both "wind alone, no engine" and "wind or towing". Ask which is true for your boat.
  • Where it starts. Ask where you board and how you get there.
  • Facilities. Ask what is on board, such as the sun deck.

The second point matters most. Ask for the answer in writing, for the named boat.

How much does a dahabiya cruise cost?

No fare appears here. It depends on the boat, the cabin and what is included, and our travel team quotes the actual trip.

Comparing a dahabiya with a ship is harder than it looks. The dahabiya example runs eight days and boards every Monday. Egypt Escapes' cruise holidays on its main list are mostly seven nights, full board. The lengths differ before the price does.

So ask each seller for the length, the cabin grade and what is in the fare. Our page on Nile river cruise prices lists what builds a price, and river cruise cabins covers the cabin itself.

Abu Simbel is an add-on whichever boat you choose

Egypt Escapes' excursions page lists Abu Simbel as an optional trip from Aswan. You can also reach it on a Lake Nasser cruise. Either way it's an extra.

So don't let it tip the choice between a small boat and a big one. Ask for it to be priced separately on both.

A short way to choose

  • Choose a dahabiya if a small boat matters most.
  • Choose a larger ship if a pool matters most.
  • Choose by the cabin and the facts you can confirm, not by the name.

Questions to ask about the boat

  • How many cabins does it have, and how many guests?
  • How is it moved, by wind, by engine or by towing?
  • Which day do you board, and how long does the trip run?
  • Which facilities are on board?
  • Is Abu Simbel priced separately?
