Which river cruise is best for first timers?
Checked October 2026
For a first river cruise, start on the Danube or the Rhine. AmaWaterways' guide for first-timers names both as popular starting points. Pick the Danube for Vienna and Budapest, or the Rhine for Cologne, Amsterdam and Strasbourg. The line you choose matters as much as the river, because fares cover different things.
This section covers a first river cruise, from the river to the tips. Every fact names its source. Where a fact comes from one cruise line, the page says so. Other lines differ. Our travel team at The JLT Group plans and books your trip.
AmaWaterways appears often below because its guides and FAQs are open to read. That is not a recommendation of the line.
Which river cruise is best for first timers?
Start with the Danube or the Rhine. The AmaWaterways guide for first-timers names both as popular starting points. It cites vineyards, old towns and castles.
So pick by the places you want most. The line's Danube page features excursions in Vienna and Budapest. Its Rhine page features Cologne, Amsterdam and Strasbourg. Ask which stops your sailing calls at.
Then pick a length. River cruises run from 7 to 14 nights, the same guide says.
Two small things help on the first day. On AmaWaterways, boarding usually starts around 3pm. Arrive early and you can leave your luggage on board. Then spend the morning in town without your bags.
What are some popular river cruise lines in Europe?
Lines differ most in what the fare covers. Compare any two you're offered on that.
Here's one line's list, from AmaWaterways' guide and its FAQ:
- all meals
- wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner
- guided excursions, with up to eight tours a day on some days
- Wi-Fi
- a Cruise Manager on board
On select sailings, some excursions cost extra. So even one line's fare can change from sailing to sailing.
Tips are a second difference. That line leaves them out of its fare. Its guidance for first-time cruisers covers a seven-night European cruise. It suggests 125 euros per guest for the crew, plus 30 euros for the Cruise Manager. Other lines handle tips differently. Ask each one what's tipped and what's already paid.
Drinks are the third. Wine, beer and soft drinks come with lunch and dinner on that line. Ask any other line when its drinks are poured, and which ones.
Our page on tipping on a river cruise goes further on tips.
Which river cruise line is the best?
The best one is whichever fare and pace fit your trip. Put any two sailings side by side and ask the same questions of each.
- What does the fare include? Meals, drinks, excursions, Wi-Fi and a Cruise Manager, line by line.
- Which excursions cost extra? Even on a line that includes them, some sailings charge for some.
- Are tips included? If not, ask for the line's guidance per guest.
- How much walking is there? Ask for the walking level of each visit.
- Does the ship suit your mobility? Ask for it in writing, for the named ship.
- Which deck is your cabin on? And what sits above and below it?
Then compare the answers, not the brochures. Our page on river cruise cabins covers the cabin question in full.
Are there Viking cruises scheduled for 2027?
Lines and their sailings change, so ask the people who can book them. Ask our travel team which 2027 sailings they can book for your river and month. You'll get dates that are live, not a list that might be out of date.
What goes wrong on a river cruise, and how do you avoid it?
Here are five mismatches between a trip and a traveller. Each has a check you can make before you book.
The walking is harder than you expected
Excursions on AmaWaterways come at three walking levels, plus a gentle walkers option. Ask which level each day's visit is, before you pay.
The ship doesn't suit your mobility
The same line says its European ships are not equipped for guests with limited mobility. Other lines and ships differ. So ask about lifts, steps and cabin access in writing, for your ship. Our mobility and access page lists what to ask.
The extras add up
Tips and some excursions can sit outside a fare. Ask for every extra in writing, and add them up before you compare.
You're travelling solo and the price jumps
Ask how a solo fare is worked out, and whether a supplement applies. Our page on the river cruise single supplement explains what to ask.
You pack for the wrong trip
A river cruise isn't an ocean cruise. Our pages on the dress code and what to pack cover the basics.
Still choosing between river and ocean? Read river cruise or ocean cruise. If the Nile is on your list, read Nile cruises. For who plans and books your trip, read how to book a river cruise.
Picked a river, or narrowed it to two? Send it through the enquiry form. Say which month you have in mind, and whether you're travelling solo.
